ANSWERS:
What's your wildlife IQ?

1. Owls have marvelous hearing. A great gray owl is able to hear mice moving under snow how deep?

ANSWER: (B) One foot. If sounds are masked by snowmobiles or other noises generated by nearby human activity, an owl's ability to find sufficient food is severly compromised.

2. River otters can swim 18 miles-per-hour. How much of their lives do these fantastic swimmers spend on land?

ANSWER: (C) Two/thirds. Actually, baby river otters don't take to water all that eagerly. Parent otters have to teach their young that water is the source of their favorite foods.

3. Since sea otters do not have layers of fat ("blubber") to keep them warm in frigid waters, the density of their fur helps them survive. In fact, sea otters have one million hairs-per-square-inch. True or false?

ANSWER: True. The unique density of one million hairs-per-square-inch of sea otter fur almost led to their extinction. Fortunately, a few survived extreme hunting by fur traders, though the species was thought to be extinct for some time before they were "rediscovered" off California's coast.
